What This Skill Does

This skill gives your AI assistant deep, standards-grounded expertise across the complete IoT protocol stack — 15 domains, covering every layer from radio PHY through cloud application protocols.

Whether you are:

  • Designing an NB-IoT device management architecture
  • Debugging a DTLS CID interop failure between devices
  • Comparing LoRaWAN vs wM-Bus for a smart water meter deployment
  • Writing an RFP for industrial OT protocol migration to OPC UA
  • Implementing SGP.32 eSIM provisioning over LwM2M
  • Choosing between Matter and Zigbee for a building automation project
  • Understanding EU CRA/RED compliance requirements for wireless IoT devices

...this skill provides the grounded knowledge your AI assistant needs to help at every stage.

How to Use

Method 1: Claude.ai Projects (Recommended)

  1. Go to claude.ai → Projects
  2. Create or open a project
  3. Click Add Content → upload SKILL.md
  4. Optionally upload relevant references/*.md files for deeper domain coverage
  5. Start chatting — Claude now has full IoT protocol expertise

Method 2: OpenClaw Skills

  1. Download iot-protocols-expert.skill from Releases
  2. Install via OpenClaw skill manager or drop in your skills directory
  3. The skill activates automatically on IoT protocol queries

Method 3: API System Prompt

import anthropic

with open("SKILL.md") as f:
    skill = f.read()

client = anthropic.Anthropic()
response = client.messages.create(
    model="claude-opus-4-6",
    system=skill,
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Compare NB-IoT NIDD vs standard bearer for water meter deployments"}]
)

Method 4: Enhanced Context (Individual Reference Files)

For deep domain work, add specific reference files alongside SKILL.md:

SKILL.md + references/lpwan.md          → LPWAN expert (LoRaWAN/NB-IoT/wM-Bus deep dive)
SKILL.md + references/security-provisioning.md → Security expert (DTLS/OSCORE/EDHOC/SGP.32)
SKILL.md + references/industrial-ot.md  → Industrial OT expert (OPC UA/Modbus/IEC 61850)

Relationship to Sibling Skills

This skill is part of a family of complementary IoT protocol skills:

Cross-referencing rules:

  • LwM2M-specific CoAP/DTLS/OSCORE usage → defer to LwM2M skill
  • 3GPP RAN, NAS, 5G core architecture → defer to 3GPP skill
  • This skill covers all other IoT protocols and provides orientation for overlap areas

Example Prompts

These demonstrate the kind of expert-level questions this skill handles:

"We're deploying 50,000 NB-IoT water meters in a European city. Compare wM-Bus OMS EN 13757-4 vs NB-IoT direct for the RF transport layer. What protocols pair best with DLMS/COSEM at the application layer?"

"Explain DTLS CID (RFC 9146) and why extension type 53 vs 54 matters for NB-IoT device session persistence. Also walk me through SGP.32 IPAd vs IPAe and which Objects (504, 3443) are used in LwM2M-based eSIM management."

"We're migrating a PROFINET + Modbus TCP factory floor to OPC UA FX over TSN. Walk me through the architecture, which OPC UA Companion Specs apply for our packaging machines (PackML), and what IEC 62443 security levels we need."

"Compare OCPP 2.0.1, ISO 15118-20 (V2G with Plug & Charge), and UNECE WP.29 R156 obligations. How do they interact for a smart charging station with bidirectional V2G capability?"

"Explain Matter's PASE and CASE commissioning flows step by step — BLE discriminator, SPAKE2+, Network Credential Transfer, CASE with NOC/ICAC/RCAC, and how the fabric model enables multi-controller setups."

"We're building a continuous glucose monitor for EU market. Map IEEE 11073-10417 to HL7 FHIR Observation resources, and identify the regulatory requirements (EU MDR, IEC 62304, IEC 62443 for cybersecurity)."

"A UK utility is deploying SMETS2 meters. Explain the GBCS message format, ZigBee SEP 1.x HAN, DCC WAN architecture, and how DLMS/COSEM is used. Compare with G3-PLC used in France's Linky deployment."

"Explain the difference between 3GPP SCEF (Rel-13) and NEF (5G Rel-15+). How does the NIDD API work for non-IP NB-IoT devices, and how does Device Triggering (TS 23.682) wake a PSM-sleeping device?"

"Walk me through all the CoAP RFCs I need for a robust LwM2M-style IoT deployment: RFC 7252, 7641 Observe, 8323 TCP binding, 9175 Echo/Request-Tag, 9177 Q-Block, and group communication (RFC 7390). Which ones are mandatory vs optional?"

"Our IoT device ships to EU. What does EU CRA compliance require? What about RED Article 3.3? When do they apply, and which ETSI/IEC standards can we use for conformance?"

Critical Notes Embedded in This Skill

DTLS CID (RFC 9146)

Extension type 54 is correct (ratified March 2022). Extension type 53 is the obsolete draft. Mixing causes silent interop failures. tls12_cid ContentType = 25. RFC 9853 adds Return Routability Check (DTLS RRC) for DTLS 1.3. See references/security-provisioning.md.

SGP.32 eSIM Objects

LwM2M Objects: 504 (RSP — 21 resources for eSIM lifecycle) and 3443 (eSIM IoT — ASN.1 pipe between eIM and IPA). Object 146 is NOT an eSIM object — it's a page number in the SGP.32 spec. IPAd = in device OS; IPAe = inside eUICC.

Wireless M-Bus / OMS

EN 13757-4. T/S/R/C transmission modes at 868 MHz; N mode at 169 MHz (Wize). Pairs with DLMS/COSEM application layer. 100M+ water/gas/heat meters deployed across EU.

EU CRA + RED Article 3.3

Mandatory for all wireless IoT devices sold in EU from 2025/2026. Not optional. See references/security-provisioning.md.
