CV-Git

AI-native version control with a code knowledge graph, semantic search, and deploy orchestration.

npm CI License: MIT TypeScript

CV-Git wraps Git with a code knowledge graph, vector search, and AI commands so you can search, explain, review, and generate code from natural language. It also serves as an MCP server for Claude Desktop and Claude Code.

Platform Support

PlatformStatusGraph BackendDocker needed?
Linux x64SupportedFalkorDB embedded (falkordblite) if a system redis-server >= 8 is present, else containerized FalkorDBOnly if no redis-8
macOS arm64SupportedFalkorDB embedded (falkordblite) if a system redis-server >= 8 is present, else containerized FalkorDBOnly if no redis-8
Windows 10/11 x64Supported (Docker)Containerized FalkorDB (auto-started)Yes (Docker Desktop)
CV-Hub serverSupportedFalkorDB (remote)Yes

Windows runs the graph on a FalkorDB container that CV-Git auto-starts for you. It requires Docker Desktop to be installed and running. There is no working native-embedded Windows backend today (falkordblite ships no Windows binary; the @ladybugdb/core embedded path is dialect-incompatible, tracked in issue #19), so the containerized client-server path is the Windows graph route.

Linux/macOS prefer the embedded backend, which needs a system redis-server >= 8.0.0 (newer than most distros ship). If that is missing, CV-Git falls back to the same auto-started FalkorDB container, so Docker is the zero-extra-setup path there too.

Prerequisites

RequirementVersionNotes
Node.js>= 20Runtime
DockerRequired on Windows; on Linux/macOS only if you lack redis-server >= 8CV-Git auto-starts a falkordb/falkordb container for the graph
OllamaOptionalLocal embeddings with nomic-embed-text (no API key needed)
Anthropic API keyOptionalPowers cv explain, cv do, cv review

The graph runs embedded where a modern redis-server is available; otherwise CV-Git auto-starts a FalkorDB container (Docker required). On Windows, Docker Desktop is required.

Installation

# Global install (recommended)
npm install -g @controlvector/cv-git

# Or run without installing
npx @controlvector/cv-git --help

Uninstall

npm uninstall -g @controlvector/cv-git

Quick Start

# Verify installation
cv --version

# Check system health
cv doctor

# Initialize CV-Git in your project
cd your-project
cv init

# Build the knowledge graph
cv sync

# Search your codebase with natural language
cv find "authentication logic"

# Explain a file or symbol
cv explain src/auth/login.ts

Backend Configuration

The graph backend is auto-detected based on your platform. Override with the CV_GIT_GRAPH_BACKEND environment variable:

ValueWhen to Use
(unset)Auto-detect: Linux/macOS embedded, Windows containerized (recommended)
falkordbliteForce embedded FalkorDB (Linux/macOS; needs system redis-server >= 8)
redisContainerized or remote FalkorDB over the network (Windows default; also the Linux/macOS path when no redis-8)
ladybugdbNon-functional (dialect-incompatible with the current @ladybugdb/core; see issue #19). Do not use.

MCP Server

CV-Git includes an MCP server for Claude Desktop and Claude Code.

Setup (Claude Desktop)

Add to ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json (macOS) or ~/.config/claude/claude_desktop_config.json (Linux):

  "mcpServers": {
    "cv-git": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/path/to/cv-git/packages/mcp-server/dist/index.js"],
      "env": {
        "ANTHROPIC_API_KEY": "your-key"
      }
    }
  }
}

Local AI Providers

CV-Git supports local LLM inference and embeddings with no cloud dependency.

ProviderChatEmbeddingsPlatformSetup
OllamaYesYesLinux, macOS, Windowsollama serve
LM StudioYesYesLinux, macOS, Windowslms server start

Run cv ai setup to configure your preferred provider interactively. See docs/local-ai.md for recommended models and details.

Configure Credentials

# Local embeddings (recommended, no API key needed)
ollama pull nomic-embed-text

# AI features need an Anthropic key:
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-...
# or
cv auth setup anthropic

# Optional: OpenAI/OpenRouter for embeddings if you don't use Ollama
cv auth setup openai

Contributing

git clone https://github.com/controlVector/cv-git.git
cd cv-git
npm install -g pnpm # if you don't have pnpm
pnpm install && pnpm build
pnpm test

System dependencies for building native modules on Linux:

sudo apt install -y libsecret-1-dev build-essential

The CI matrix tests on both ubuntu-latest (falkordblite backend) and windows-latest (LadybugDB backend).

Troubleshooting

# First step for any issue
cv doctor

# cv command not found after npm install?
npm config get prefix # shows /usr/local or ~/.npm-global
export PATH="$(npm config get prefix)/bin:$PATH"
