Codex skill for generating and incrementally editing diagrams.net / draw.io .drawio XML files.
It is designed for architecture diagrams, paper figures, network structure diagrams, and other layout-sensitive visuals where semantic similarity is not enough and the output must remain editable in diagrams.net.
What It Supports
- Generate a
.drawiodiagram from a text description - Incrementally edit an existing
.drawiofile - Recreate paper-style figures with a layout-spec-first workflow
- Validate diagram XML before delivery
- Rewrite between compressed and uncompressed
.drawioformats
Install
Copy this repository's contents into:
~/.codex/skills/drawio-xml-editor/
For example on Windows:
C:\Users\<your-name>\.codex\skills\drawio-xml-editor\
Then restart Codex.
Typical Workflow
The skill is built around:
reference image / text requirement
-> layout spec JSON
-> draw.io XML
-> validation
Typical commands:
python scripts/drawio_xml_tool.py lint-layout spec.json
python scripts/drawio_xml_tool.py render-layout spec.json --output out.drawio
python scripts/drawio_xml_tool.py validate out.drawio
python scripts/drawio_xml_tool.py rewrite out.drawio --output out-compressed.drawio --format compressed

Notes
- The skill prioritizes layout fidelity over semantic restatement.
- Existing
.drawiofiles are meant to be edited incrementally, not regenerated from scratch unless necessary. - The helper script is useful even outside Codex if you want to inspect or validate
.drawiofiles from the command line.
