English Writing Tutor — a Claude Skill

An honest English writing tutor for Claude. Give it a text (an essay, email, IELTS answer…) and it returns a detailed, evidence-based diagnosis instead of flattery or a rewrite:

  • CEFR level estimate (A1–C2) with confidence and a rationale grounded in the CEFR Companion Volume
  • Every error with the exact span, correction, category, severity, rule explanation and a fresh example
  • Transparent accuracy score — letters 15% · words 30% · sentences 35% · paragraphs 20%
  • Colour-coded vocabulary profile — every word tinted by its A1–C2 level
  • Register and text-type check (argumentative, discursive, IELTS Task 1/2, emails, reports…)
  • Minimal corrected text — only the errors fixed, the learner's own wording kept
  • Personal study plan with trusted resources
  • An HTML report (report.html) with summary cards, charts and a before/after diff

Feedback is written in the language of the request (e.g. Turkish request → Turkish feedback), and it looks specifically for common transfer errors from Turkish and other first languages.

Türkçe: Bu skill, İngilizce yazılarınızı CEFR seviyesi, doğruluk oranı, hata açıklamaları, renkli kelime seviyeleri ve çalışma planıyla analiz eder. Türkçe sorarsanız geri bildirim Türkçe gelir.

Usage

Just ask Claude to check a text, for example:

Check my essay and tell me my level: Nowadays, social media is a very important subject for young people…

Bu IELTS Task 2 cevabımı değerlendirir misin? (metin)

You can also attach a .txt, .docx or .pdf file, and include the task prompt so the text type and word-count requirements are checked too.

How it works

SKILL.md contains the full instructions plus a small helper script (tutor.py, Python 3 standard library only) that Claude writes out and runs when code execution is available:

  • python tutor.py vocab text.txt — text statistics and the A1–C2 vocabulary distribution
  • python tutor.py report text.txt analysis.json — accuracy score and the HTML report

Without code execution, Claude performs the same analysis by hand and marks word levels as estimates.

Data and references

Word levels come from openly licensed lists, downloaded at runtime from openlanguageprofiles/olp-en-cefrj:

  • CEFR-J Wordlist v1.5 — Yukio Tono, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (free with citation)
  • Octanove Vocabulary Profile C1/C2 v1.0 — Octanove Labs (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Level descriptors are paraphrased from the Council of Europe CEFR Companion Volume (2020) and the Cambridge English Writing Assessment Scale. The level given is an estimate from a single text, not an official certificate.
