Explain a dense technical document to a newcomer, step by step, at their pace

mfozmen/stepwisecommunitylistedunreviewed

Set up

Skills are installed by placing their folder where your agent loads skills.

The download comes from github.com/mfozmen/stepwise itself, not from our server, so what you get is exactly what its author published.

Install instructions come from the README

Skills do not use an MCP config. Follow the steps in the README below.

Stepwise

A Claude Code and opencode plugin that teaches a dense technical document instead of summarizing it.

You hand it a research write-up, design doc, RFC, spec, or long ticket. It reads the whole thing once, reorders it into a teaching sequence, and explains it 2–3 sections per turn — then stops and waits for you to say continue. Every section is appended to one page that grows into a single readable document, so at the end you have a deliverable, not eight scattered chat fragments.

Built for the case where someone new to a subject has to actually understand it — a new team member, someone from another discipline, or you three months from now.

Install

Claude Code

/plugin marketplace add mfozmen/stepwise
/plugin install stepwise@stepwise

Or from my devkit marketplace, alongside my other Claude Code plugins:

/plugin marketplace add mfozmen/devkit
/plugin install stepwise@devkit

opencode

Project-local — clone the repo and open it in opencode. Its .opencode/ commands and agent load automatically, and opencode.json exposes the skill:

git clone https://github.com/mfozmen/stepwise
cd stepwise
opencode

To add Stepwise to an existing project instead, copy .opencode/commands/, .opencode/agents/, and skills/stepwise/ into that project, and add the skill path to its opencode.json:

{
  "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",
  "skills": { "paths": ["./skills"] }
}

Global — copy the commands, agent, and skill into your opencode config directory:

git clone https://github.com/mfozmen/stepwise
cp -r stepwise/.opencode/commands/* ~/.config/opencode/commands/
cp -r stepwise/.opencode/agents/* ~/.config/opencode/agents/
cp -r stepwise/skills/stepwise ~/.config/opencode/skills/

(On Windows, copy the same folders into %USERPROFILE%\.config\opencode\.)

As a plugin — point opencode at the plugin module. The npm package is opencode-stepwise; it must be published first (see CONTRIBUTING.md), otherwise use the local path:

opencode plugin opencode-stepwise # once published
{
  "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",
  "plugin": ["file:///absolute/path/to/stepwise/opencode/plugin.js"]
}

The plugin registers the commands, the stepwise subagent, and the skill path itself, but does not replace commands or agents a project already defines. Restart opencode after changing its config.

Use

Claude Code:

/stepwise https://example.com/design-doc
/stepwise ./docs/rfc-0042.md
/stepwise PROJ-123

opencode:

/stepwise https://example.com/design-doc
/stepwise ./docs/rfc-0042.md
/stepwise PROJ-123

The skill also triggers on its own when you say things like "explain this to me", "walk me through it", or "step by step".

Then just say continue between turns. Ask anything mid-stream — it answers, ties the answer back to the subject, and returns to waiting. It never runs ahead of you.

You can also state the rules in your own words and they are taken literally: "in small pieces", "don't drown me in technical detail", "use diagrams", "problem first, then the solution".

Language

On its first run Stepwise asks which language you want to be taught in and remembers the answer in ~/.stepwise/config.md. Change it any time:

/stepwise:config explain in English # Claude Code
/stepwise-config explain in English # opencode

What it guarantees

  • You hold the pace. No turn advances before you say so.
  • Nothing invented. It authors the ordering, the headings, and the visuals — never the information. If the source doesn't answer something, it says so.
  • Uncertainty stays visible. What the source flagged as unverified, undecided, or risky is marked as such, inline and again at the end.
  • One visual per section, and never as decoration.
  • One growing page, republished to the same address every turn.

The method

The full technique lives in skills/stepwise/SKILL.md — the 11-step process, the section skeleton, the writing rules, the diagram patterns, and the table of common mistakes. It's written to be readable on its own, independent of any subject it gets applied to.

Layout
